Description

Observing the interesting pair of canvases, it is quite automatic to recognize in them the ancient mark of Bolognese culture and its well-known grand taste, which, in the Genoese context from which they come, always aroused vivid collector interest, as evidenced by collections such as Palazzo Cattaneo Adorno. We are clearly talking here about a pictorial typology at the exact moment of its becoming a genre, namely landscape painting. While for the full assimilation and understanding of this phenomenon, it seems almost obvious to refer to the fundamental exhibition that was "L'ideale classico del Seicento in Italia e la pittura di paesaggio" (1962), it must be emphasized here how the root of this investigation into nature is to be found in the city of Bologna, in those leading figures between the 15th and 17th centuries who were responsible for a colossal expressive reform: the Carracci, and especially the figure of Annibale. In their school, which later became an academy, there was, in the words of Longhi, "a direct communication, not from the opening of a book but from the opening of a window, with the spectacle of the circumstances of nature, with the cheerful skin of the countryside, with the texture of things under true light" (1935).
