Description

This small-sized painting is considered to be a work created by Annibale Carracci in his early youth, when, for study purposes, he certainly visited Parma and possibly Venice. In the Emilian city, he admired the works of Correggio, whose influence would be mediated and absorbed shortly afterward by Venetian elements, from which the artist drew extensively. This is evident in the rapid and broken brushwork of this panel, which directly compares with the Deposition painted by a young Paolo Veronese in 1548, now at the Castelvecchio Museum in Verona. It also indirectly relates to Correggio's painting of the same subject created for the church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Parma approximately a quarter of a century before Veronese's canvas.
