Description

This unpublished painting depicts the unfolding of a sermon by Christ near a watercourse winding through the wooded mountains of a valley. In the foreground, in the lower left corner, the figures of the twelve apostles are gathered, six on each side, around the central figure of the Savior, who, in a silent sermon, gestures with his hands demonstratively. The distinctly Caravaggesque character of this landscape is evident at first glance in the deep oblique cut given to the perspective, which follows the winding course of the river to the horizon, where the profile of the azure mountains blends with the sky. The broad and harmonious breath of the scene, as well as the measured classicism that pervades it, along with the Neo-Venetian influence dominating the palette, are characteristics of the brief span of Annibale Carracci's late works, encompassing the period between 1601 and 1603. This was before physical and spiritual illness began to distance the master from his artistic activity starting from 1604-5.
