Description

The canvas in question is a work that Longhi, through his essay on Caravaggio, mentions as a model for the Saint Matthew and the Angel (destroyed in Berlin) in its first version. Figino was a prominent figure on the artistic scene in Milan in the second half of the 16th century, quickly gaining fame as a portraitist, as evidenced by the high quality of the youthful Portrait of Angelo Dannona (signed and dated 1571). He also excelled in the painting of "History" following in the footsteps of his master, Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo.
